Orin Swift Wine Tasting (New Albany location)

Dec 11th, 2014

One of the most heralded wine makers in the business, Dave Phinney, sells his wine under many monikers. The most well known of these is Orin Swift. Phinney came to fame with his red blend, The Prisoner, and then took off from there with a slew of wines under the Orin Swift label. On December 11th, we will have our first opportunity to host a special wine tasting of his wines. Due to the scarcity and availability of these wines, we've never been able to keep enough around to do a tasting, but we've been reserving these back for awhile to be able to do so now.

Here is the lineup:

- Prisoner - A delicious wine offering zesty wild berry, spice and fresh tobacco, with focused and well-structured blackberry flavors. plush, rich and concentrated, with wonderful focus. Zinfandel, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Petite Syrah and Charbono.

- Blindfold - A blend of Chardonnay, Viognier, Marsanne, Roussanne, Grenache Blanc, Semillon and Riesling, this hodge-podge white shows off 25% new French and Hungarian oak and hot buttered apples and pears. There is a caramel undertone throughout its oak-toasted marshmallow and freshly-popped popcorn. Fans of big and oaky will really love this wine.

- Mannequin - A blend of Chardonnay, Viognier, Semillon, Muscat, and Marsanne. A brilliant yellow, gold hue invites the senses and draws attention the wine’s supremely fragrant notes of honeysuckle, pear, orange peel, green apple, roasted fig, and a touch of French oak. Ripe, round, and exotic, the palate is treated to a supple and concentrated mouthfeel supported with melon, fresh pineapple, and citrus flavors.

- Palermo - Palermo is incredibly dense, with ripe currant aromas on the nose balanced by sweet cigar box scents. Those qualities all carry over to the palate, framed by ripe, mouth coating tannins and a little acidic lift on the mid palate. Long and sweet on the finish.

- Papillon - Papillon is a blend of 90% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest other Bordeaux varietals. It exhibits supple, sweet tannin in addition to lush black cherry and black currant fruit, cedar, toasty new oak, and spice box. The finish suggests that the wine is still somewhat restrained and closed, but promising.

- Abstract - Abstract is a blend of Grenache, Petite Sirah, and Syrah primarily from hillside vineyards in Sonoma County. The aromas are all berry and black fruits, with neatly integrated caramelized oak. A huge entry coats the mouth. The wine has tons of weight on the mid-palate and is dense with layers of ripe cherry and strawberries. The finish is laced with long soft tannins that go on and on.

- D66 - A project based in the south of France in the village of Maury. Most of the vines are a minimum of 60 years old with some parcels even older than that. The soils are predominately schist, so the vines really struggle producing deep dark fruit with bold concentration. The wine is the classic Orin Swift style, composed of 80% grenache with 12% syrah and 8% carignan rounding out the blend.

This tasting is free and open to the public (21 and older)
